When you look at the door of a car, you aren’t wowed because of it, are you? It is a very functional component of the car and it opens and shuts. That’s what you think of a door. However, when we look at supercars, custom cars, and luxury cars, we are wowed by their unusual types of doors. This blog post talks about the different types of doors.

1. The suicide-door-This type of door, is also known as coach door, because horse-carriages used them. This is seen in luxury cars like Rolls-Royce models and old classic cars and is not mainstream. Basically the door has the hinges at the opposite ends as opposed to that of a normal car, so they open in the opposite direction, I mean the front and the rear, like a welcoming gesture. They aren’t mainstream because they aren’t as safe as regular doors.

2. Butterfly doors-Butterfly doors are seen in most supercars. They open by swinging out and flying in the air. They are quite a sight to behold. They open quite wide and are hinged to the A-pillar, so they are quite convenient as compared to other types of flying doors.

3. Gullwing doors-These doors are connected to the roof of the car and open outwards and open till the top, and they look like the wings of a falcon, hence the name gullwing. They are famous for being in the DMC Delorean, Mercedes-Benz 300SL, and the Tesla Model X.

4. Scissor door-Seen in most Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars, these doors are like buttefly doors, but they go straight in the sky and swing up vertically, and they don’t open widely. This is very useful in a country where parking spaces are limited, because the door does not protrude outwards. However, they sometimes cannot be opened if the ceiling is too low.

5. Canopy door-One of the rarest types of door, this door is like a canopy. It is mounted on top of the car and remains that way until it is closed. It opens up above, and you come out through the roof. This is the type of car door that comes in handy when you have to park your car inches away from another one. Since the door goes over the top of the car, it is easy for passengers to hop out without having to worry about the sides.

6. Dihedral doors-Dihedral doors are similar to scissor doors; the only difference is that these doors open by moving outward while rotating at 90 degrees at the door hinge. They are the latest invention in the car industry, and some popular car models that feature this door type are the Agera R, the Agera RS, the Koenigsegg Agera, the Koenigsegg CC8S, CCR, and Regera.

So, here goes. Do tell me when you come across one that hasn’t been mentioned. It is hard to see new types of doors nowadays.
